The duration does not only depend on the diving organisation, but also on the diving school. While it is usual to spread a course over several days and weekends in many places where courses take place in local bodies of water, similar course content is usually taught in 3-5 days on holidays, due to the lack of time.
Fundamentally the usual beginners’ courses are made up of three parts.
Open water dives
The respective scope and intensity of the three parts comply with the diving organization. At the same time, this is exactly what constitutes the main differences between them. We have outlined somewhat more precisely some of the most common beginners’ courses here in the diving-wiki.
All parts normally take place in groups. What is valid here is just like back in your school days: The smaller the group, the more intensive the lessons. Hence please inform yourself in advance about what the maximal size of the groups will be and then decide whether that is ok for you!
In the classroom you first learn everything that you must know about diving. In the meantime, this theory unit is partially offered to be completed online beforehand, or at least parts of it. By doing so you already have the possibility to deal with it once before the holiday and you can concentrate yourself mainly on the practice on-site.
Subsequently, the theory is put into practice. After the assembly of the diving equipment has been explained, you go with it into the water for the first time. This part of the training does not necessarily have to take place in a pool. “Pool-like conditions” are also allowed. In case there is no pool available, this part takes place in secured open water, e.g. a bay.
No matter where the training takes place in the end, what must be practised before the real open water dive is prescribed by the diving organisation. Among others, these are:
If all exercises have been carried out appropriately before, the crowning culmination follows – the open water dive(s). Here the exercises are repeated first and subsequently the underwater world is enjoyed in a small circuit. Generally you dive using the so-called buddy system. This means that like during an excursion day at school, you always dive in pairs of two next to each other within a group. By doing so you can share your discoveries with one another but also, as learned beforehand, you can help in case of emergency (of course the diving instructor will also be on the spot).
And that’s it! To conclude, your diving certificate will be handed out to you. With it you are then allowed to go diving to a certain extent (diving depth, etc.) worldwide.
What does a beginners’ diving course cost?
Depending on the country, diving school and diving organization, there are also here partially large discrepancies, reason why a reliable statement cannot be made.
You can orient(ate) yourself with a rule-of-thumb estimate of 300-500€.
